Five countries, and the caveat for each
Given your month there are usually two or three real candidates. These are the arguments, including the ones against.
Kenya
The case: the highest density of big cats anywhere, private conservancies beside the Masai Mara where you can walk and drive at night, and the Indian Ocean two hours away by air. It is the easiest country here to combine bush and beach in a single fortnight, and our partner agency is based there.
The caveat: the Masai Mara reserve itself is genuinely busy from July to October. The answer is to stay on a conservancy rather than in the reserve, which costs more and is worth it.
Tanzania
The case: scale. The Serengeti is vast in a way the Mara is not, the Ngorongoro Crater has no equivalent, and Zanzibar is forty minutes from the airstrips. February calving in the south is one of the great wildlife spectacles.
The caveat: it costs more than Kenya for a comparable camp, and the distances mean more flying and more cost in the joins.
Rwanda
The case: an hour with a gorilla family, from lodges that are among the best-designed on the continent. Rwanda is small, safe, clean and easy, which makes it the strongest short-honeymoon country here, five or six nights is a complete trip.
The caveat: the trek is a hard morning. Steep, wet, muddy and up to several hours each way. It is not a gentle activity and it is worth knowing that before you book it into a honeymoon.
Botswana
The case: water in the dry season, mokoro at eye level with the reeds, and enormous private concessions where you may not see another vehicle all day. For couples who want solitude above everything, nowhere does it better.
The caveat: the most expensive country on this page, and there is no beach within easy reach. Pairing it usually means Victoria Falls or Cape Town rather than a coast.
Uganda
The case: the same gorillas at a lower permit price, plus chimpanzees at Kibale, tree-climbing lions and the Nile. Wilder, more varied and far less visited than Rwanda.
The caveat: more driving, wetter forest and a rougher trek. Choose it when the experience matters more than the ease.
